Pronunciation: MAT-trim CAW-thon
aka: Mat, Thom Grinwell
A ta'veren. He was born and raised in Emond's Field. His father and mother are Abell Cauthon and Natti Cauthon. He has two sisters, Bodewhin Cauthon and Eldrin Cauthon. See below for more information about Mat's dice.
Physical Description
He has a wiry body and brown eyes. (TEotW,Ch1) He is long-limbed as a stork. (TGH,Ch3) He is about 5'11" or 6' and about 180 pounds.
Chronology
- Mat is born near the end of the year 978 NE.
- At age ten, Rand and Mat get in big trouble when Cenn Buie catches them in his apple trees. (TEotW,Ch3)
- At the age of ten, Mat tries to cut open a firework and gets several lickings for it. (TDR,Ch40)
- At the annual sheep shearing, Rand, Mat and Perrin goof off with Bandry Crawe, Dav Ayellin, Elam Dowtry and Lem Thane until the mayor summons them for a story. (TEotW,Earlier)
- When they are thirteen, Rand and Mat steal a jug of apple brandy and Nynaeve switches them for it. (TSR,Ch7)
- He flours two of Haral Luhhan's dogs. (TEotW,Ch2)
- He meets with Rand and they discuss seeing the Fade. (TEotW,Ch1)
- He meets Moiraine and sees Lan. Moiraine gives him a coin. (TEotW,Ch2)
- He listens to Fain with Rand and Perrin. The boys later discuss him. (TEotW,Ch3)
- Rand, Mat and Perrin meet Thom who offers to tell stories. Mat expresses an interest in battles. (TEotW,Ch4)
- Mat is not injured even though his house was burned by the Trollocs. (TEotW,Ch7)
- After she Heals Tam, Moiraine goes to get Mat and Perrin. (TEotW,Ch8)
- Mat is with Lan when he comes for Rand. After the crowd in front of the inn disperses, they go to the stable. (TEotW,Ch9)
- Moiraine, Lan, Mat and Rand meet Perrin in the stable. They are joined by Egwene and Thom and ride north. (TEotW,Ch10)
- Mat and the rest of the party ride to Taren Ferry. (TEotW,Ch11)
- Mat and the rest of the party cross the Taren River, camp for an hour, then head north for Baerlon. (TEotW,Ch12)

- Mat runs into Rand while touring the town. He plays a prank on some Whitecloaks, but is shocked when Rand actually confronts them. They meet Thom, tell him about the dreams, and return to the inn. (TEotW,Ch15)
- Mat and the rest of the group meet with Nynaeve. Nynaeve then has a private talk with Moiraine. (TEotW,Ch16)
- Mat and the rest of the group enjoy Thom's stories in the common room. After a Fade confronts Rand, the group flees. At the town gate they are confronted by Whitecloaks before they can escape. (TEotW,Ch17)
- Mat and the rest of the party ride east for three days. They are attacked by Trollocs and take refuge in Shadar Logoth. Mat shouts a Manetheren battle cry in the Old Tongue during the attack. (TEotW,Ch18)
- After they make camp, Mat convinces Rand and Perrin to go exploring. They meet Mordeth who offers them treasure, then attacks them. Mat takes the ruby dagger. They barely reach camp before dark. Lan returns from scouting with news there are Trollocs nearby so they prepare to flee. (TEotW,Ch19)
- As they ride, Mashadar separates Moiraine and Lan from Mat and the rest. Trollocs attack and everyone scatters. Mat meets up with Rand and Thom and winds up on the Spray. (TEotW,Ch20)

- Rand and Mat stay at Else Grinwell's place on the way to Caemlyn. (TEotW,Ch31)
- Rand and Mat play at The Dancing Cartman. They then escape from Darkfriends. Mat is blinded by lightning.

- Mat takes a walk. He visits the Warder practice field and beats Gawyn and Galad together with a quarterstaff. (TDR,Ch24)
- Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne visit Mat with the intent of having him carry Elayne's letter to Morgase in Caemlyn. He agrees if they can get him out of Tar Valon. After some discussion, Nynaeve gives him one of Siuan's executive orders. (TDR,Ch28)
- Mat leaves the White Tower and gets caught up in gambling. Some Darkfriends and a Gray Man try to kill him. He stops at The Woman of Tanchico to rest a bit. (TDR,Ch30)
- Mat recognizes Thom and convinces him to go to Caemlyn. (TDR,Ch31)
- Using Siuan's executive order, Mat and Thom get by the guard at the dock and board the Gray Gull. More Darkfriends try to kill Mat that night. (TDR,Ch32)
- Mat and Thom arrive at Aringill and stay in the stable of The Good Queen. They are interrupted by Aludra and save her from an execution squad. She gives Mat a bundle of fireworks. (TDR,Ch40)
- Mat and Thom make camp as they near Caemlyn. Mat experiments with Aludra's fireworks. They are attacked by a woman and three men, but kill their attackers and ride on. (TDR,Ch44)
- Mat and Thom arrive in Caemlyn. Mat goes directly to the Royal Palace but is refused admittance. He goes back to The Queen's Blessing, tells Thom and Basel Gill what happened, then goes back to try again. (TDR,Ch45)
- Mat climbs a wall of the Royal Palace. He overhears a deep voice order the death of Elayne. When he delivers Elayne's letter to Morgase, he discovers the owner of the voice is Lord Gaebril. Tallanvor escorts him out of the palace. (TDR,Ch46)
- Mat returns to The Queen's Blessing and reports the danger to Elayne. Thom agrees to accompany Mat to Tear. (TDR,Ch47)
- Mat and Thom book passage on the Swift from Aringill to Tear. They take a room in The White Crescent and begin hunting for the girls. Mat finds and kills Comar, but they continue to search. Thom develops a cough. (TDR,Ch49)
- Thom's cough gets so bad that Mat asks the innkeeper for a Wise Woman. He directs them to Mother Guenna who tells them about the girls. Mat leaves Thom in her care. (TDR,Ch52)
- Mat goes to the Stone of Tear and encounters Juilin and the Aiel. He blows a hole in the wall with Aludra's fireworks. Juilin agrees to accompany him and they begin searching for the girls. Mat also encounters High Lord Darlin. (TDR,Ch54)
- Mat and Juilin free Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve from their cell but they show little gratitude. (TDR,Ch55)
- Mat meets Aviendha, Bain and Chiad and learns that flirting with Maidens is dangerous. He listens to Moiraine talk about what lies ahead. He plans to leave as soon as possible. (TDR,Ch56)
- Mat tells Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve about Morgase and Lord Gaebril, but Elayne does not believe him. (TSR,Ch6)
- Mat plays cards with Tairen lords Carlomin, Edorion, Estean and Reimon. When the bubble of evil strikes, Mat's cards come to life and try to kill him. (TSR,Ch2)
- Mat confides in Thom about the attack. Thom convinces him to stay in the Stone of Tear. (TSR,Ch4)
- Mat asks Egwene for advice on what he should do. She tells him about the twisted red doorway. (TSR,Ch8)
- Since his bad incident, everyone in the Stone of Tear avoids Mat so he spends his time in taverns. (TSR,Ch9)
- In a tavern, Mat hears a rumor that Whitecloaks invaded the Two Rivers. He talks this over with Perrin. He wants to leave but cannot. As he leaves, he runs into Berelain who ignores him. (TSR,Ch13)
- Mat goes through the twisted red doorway. The Aelfinn tell him he must go to Rhuidean or he will die. They also tell him he is fated to marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons, to die and live again and to give up half the light of the world to save the world. (TSR,Ch15)
- In the Heart of the Stone, Mat watches as Rand issues orders to the High Lords, then plunges Callandor into the floor. (TSR,Ch21)
- Rand leads Moiraine, Lan, Mat, Egwene, Rhuarc, Aviendha and the rest of the Aiel to a Portal Stone and channels them to the Aiel Waste. (TSR,Ch22)
- On Chaendaer, Rand and his party are greeted by Wise Ones Amys, Bair, Melaine and Seana. After Rand asks permission to enter Rhuidean, Mat speaks up and asks, too. They both go. (TSR,Ch23)
- Rand and Mat go to the center of Rhuidean and find Avendesora, the glass columns, and the control statues. Mat finds the other twisted red doorway and visits the Eelfinn where he inadvertently asks for memories, freedom from the One Power, and to be back in Rhuidean. He chokes and blacks out. (TSR,Ch24)
- Rand resuscitates Mat after he is hung. Mat now has the foxhead medallion, the ashandarei, and fluency in the Old Tongue. They leave Rhuidean. (TSR,Ch26)
- Rand and Mat return from Rhuidean at dawn. The Wise Ones apply ointments to soothe their injuries. (TSR,Ch34)
- Mat rides with Rand on the journey from Chaendaer to Imre Stand. When they meet the peddlers, Rand tells Mat that Kadere is dangerous. Mat buys Kadere's wide brim hat. (TSR,Ch36)
- When they camp at Imre Stand, Jasin Natael questions Mat. When the Trollocs attack, Mat feels his foxhead medallion pulse cold. (TSR,Ch37)
- On the trip to Cold Rocks Hold, Mat tries to make time with Isendre. Keille offers to sell her to him, then comments that few have ever refused an offer from her. (TSR,Ch48)
- Mat accompanies Rand when they arrive at Cold Rocks Hold. (TSR,Ch49)
- After the battle with the Trollocs and Draghkar, Mat tries to talk to Isendre but she slams the door in his face. (TSR,Ch50)

- Mat decides that he really is going to leave. He goes to Rand's tent to tell him and winds up analyzing the next day's battle plan with Lan. He feels the dice rattling for the first time. (TFoH,Ch42)
- Mat leaves before dawn, but bands of Aiel divert him back toward the River Alguenya. He joins up with the Tairen and Cairhienin forces when he sees them heading into a Shaido trap. (TFoH,Ch43)
- Mat successfully leads his men through several encounters with the Shaido. (TFoH,Ch44)
- In the heat of the battle Mat is knocked from his horse. Couladin attacks him and Mat kills Couladin. (TFoH,Ch45)
- The next morning Talmanes and Nalesean swear fealty to Mat and declare that he should have his own banner. (TFoH,Ch45)
- Mat and his army return to Cairhien. He brings news to Rand that Morgase is dead. Later, he mentions Caemlyn in front of Melindhra and she tries to kill him. (TFoH,Ch51)
- The next morning Moiraine leads Rand, Mat, Asmodean, Aviendha, Egwene and Lan to the docks of Cairhien. When Lanfear attacks, Asmodean and Mat are left outside the main battle. (TFoH,Ch52)
- After Lanfear's attack Mat tries to help Egwene who is seriously injured. (TFoH,Ch53)
- Rand, Mat, Asmodean, Aviendha and numerous Aiel warriors Skim to Caemlyn outside the Royal Palace. They are immediately attacked by Trollocs, Fades and lightning. Mat, Asmodean and Aviendha are killed. (TFoH,Ch54)
- Mat, Asmodean and Aviendha are alive again after Rand balefires Rahvin back beyond the point where he killed them with lightning. (TFoH,Ch55)
- That afternoon Mat and Aviendha talk by a fountain while Asmodean plays his harp. (TFoH,Ch56)
- Mat has the Band of the Red Hand stationed at Maerone. During an inspection, he rescues Olver from an attack. He notes a Sea Folk ship docking at Aringill. He readies the Band to leave for Tear. (LoC,Ch5)
- Mat leads the Band of the Red Hand south along the River Erinin toward Tear. A dozen Aiel enter the camp by gateway and try to assassinate Mat. Mat learns that Olver is in the camp and "hires" him as his personal messenger. (LoC,Ch22)
- Mat plays Snakes and Foxes with Olver and something about the game tickles his memory. Rand arrives and sends Mat and the Band of the Red Hand to Salidar to fetch Elayne. (LoC,Ch33)
- Mat, Aviendha, Vanin and two bannermen ride into Salidar. Mat confronts Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve and is astounded to learn that Egwene is Amyrlin. (LoC,Ch38)
- Egwene puts Mat in his place. Frustrated, he goes to find Thom. (LoC,Ch39)
- Mat gives Thom the letter. Thom tells him they are going to Ebou Dar and suggests the Mat come, too. (LoC,Ch40)
- Mat waits three days in Salidar. At a party one evening he dances with Halima. Egwene tells him that he will accompany Elayne and Nynaeve to Ebou Dar. They all leave the next day. (LoC,Ch44)
- Mat and several of his Redarms accompany Elayne and Nynaeve to Ebou Dar. Elayne asks him to let her study the foxhead medallion, but he refuses. He is angry when the Aes Sedai experiment on him from afar. At Ebou Dar, Mat randomly chooses The Wandering Woman as a place to stay. (LoC,Ch47)
- Mat and his men are at The Wandering Woman. They search the Rahad trying to keep up with Elayne and Nynaeve. (LoC,Ch52)
- Mat watches Olver win a horse race. He spots Mili Skane and Noal Charin at the track. He follows Mili Skane to the Chelsaine Palace. Noal Charin is there, too, and tells him that Carridin is staying there. Along the way, Mat buys a ring. (ACoS,Ch14)
- Mat goes to the Tarasin Palace to leave a note for Elayne and Nynaeve warning them about Carridin. He runs into Joline, Teslyn, Adeleas, Merilille and Sareitha. He answers a summons to Queen Tylin who comes on to him. He meets her son, Beslan, and agrees to go to all the festivals with him. (ACoS,Ch16)
- Mat goes back to The Wandering Woman where two men try to kidnap him. He kills them. He orders Vanin to watch Carridin. He finds a note in his pocket warning him that Elayne and Nynaeve are taking too many risks. (ACoS,Ch17)
- Mat is attacked by three "beggars" trying to kidnap him. He sees fireworks and thinks about finding an Illuminator. He meets Birgitte back in his room and finally recognizes her. They agree to keep each other's secrets. They go down to the common room to party. (ACoS,Ch21)
- Elayne and Nynaeve apologize to Mat and tell him about the Bowl of the Winds. He agrees to move into the Tarasin Palace. His dice stop rolling. (ACoS,Ch22)
- Mat and the Redarms move into the Tarasin Palace. Tylin accosts him and he is barely saved by Thom and Juilin. Elayne and Nynaeve start him watching the Kin house. He has Olver moved to his rooms to avoid Tylin. (ACoS,Ch28)
- Tylin finally traps Mat and takes him to bed. He goes to watch the Kin house with Nalesean, Birgitte and Beslan. They are attacked by "beggars" on the way. On impulse, Mat follows a woman who leaves the Kin house. (ACoS,Ch29)
- Having found the six story building, Mat returns to the Kin house only to meet Elayne and the Aes Sedai there and learn that they got the information, too. (ACoS,Ch31)
- The next morning, Mat organizes the expedition to get the Bowl. He is quite surprised to see Lan with Nynaeve. (ACoS,Ch37)
- Mat and his companions reach the six story building. He stays downstairs. They are attacked by Falion and Ispan but defeat them. He runs upstairs and is confronted by the gholam. He cannot hurt the gholam but discovers that the foxhead medallion burns it. He saves Elayne and the others. (ACoS,Ch38)
- Nynaeve, Elayne and Mat meet with the five Salidar Aes Sedai, the Kin, and the Sea Folk Windfinders to discuss the use of the Bowl of the Winds. They prepare to leave immediately. Mat learns that Olver is out and goes to look for him. He is caught in the Seanchan invasion and a brick wall falls on him. (ACoS,Ch39)
- Mat spends weeks recuperating from his broken leg and ribs in the Tarasin Palace. (WH,Ch15)
- Mat talks with Aludra about fireworks and learns that she is interested in a bellfounder. (WH,Ch15)
- Mat, Thom, Beslan and Olver return to the city. Beslan is plotting rebellion. On his way back to the palace, the gholam attacks Mat again. Noal Charin helps him out. (WH,Ch16)
- Mat brings Noal Charin back to the palace with him. He goes to Tylin's quarters and meets Tuon. The dice crash to a stop. (WH,Ch17)
- Mat talks with a bellfounder, but learns nothing that helps him with Aludra. Mat has his clothes and gold taken to The Wandering Woman as he prepares to leave town. (WH,Ch18)
- Setalle Anan brings Joline to The Wandering Woman while Mat is there. He agrees to help her escape. He goes to the damane quarters and offers to help Teslyn escape. He also gets saddled with Edesina. (WH,Ch19)
- Mat sees off Tylin and Suroth when they leave for a tour of Altara. Mat and Thom develop a plan to get Joline, Teslyn and Edesina out of Ebou Dar. (WH,Ch28)
- Mat's first plan fails when Setalle cannot use the a'dam on Joline. Egeanin and Domon offer to hire Mat, Thom and Juilin. Egeanin tells Mat that she can supply three sul'dam. Thom and Juilin tell Mat about Tanchico, the Black Ajah and the sad bracelets. (WH,Ch29)
- Mat reviews his revised plan. He meets Egeanin and Domon at the Tarasin Palace stableyard and finds that they brought everyone from The Wandering Woman. (WH,Ch30)
- Mat prepares to leave and finds that Tylin returned early. He bids her farewell and leaves her tied up. He goes to the damane kennels and frees one of the Windfinders. At the stableyard, Tuon confronts him and he grabs her. Egeanin and the others arrive and she names Tuon the Daughter of the Nine Moons. Mat names her his wife - three times. (WH,Ch31)

- Mat finally asks Thom about the letter from Moiraine and he reads it. He tells Thom, Noal and Olver about the Aelfinn and Eelfinn and agrees to go with Thom to rescue Moiraine. (KoD,Ch10)

- Elayne tries a ruse to get Chesmal to talk but it backfires when Darkfriend Jaq Lounalt breaks the prisoners free. Mellar stabs her but has Chesmal Heal her. Mat and Birgitte find her and take her to Melfane. (ToM,Ch23)
- Melfane orders a full week bed rest for Elayne. She returns Mat�s foxhead medallion. (ToM,Ch24)

Mat often feels dice tumbling in his head. It is not exactly clear what triggers them to start, but they usually stop at a crucial event or decision. Here is a list of references.
